Press release december 2010
Launch of the interactive artistic platform “Public Window” in Leiden shop windows.
On December 10 the artistic platform publicwindow.net will be launched. For this pilot in Leiden the artists Thomas Wildner and Guido Winkler developed interactive works in two shop windows. These first two windows Public Window 001 and Public Window 002 are located at Aalmarkt 12 and Stille Rijn 9 and will be linked through an online network. This will make them ready to be influenced and changed by the audience in front of the window and by the internet user from any other location. On December 10 between 17.00 and 19.00 the artists will be on site and an explanation about this project will be given while enjoying some snacks and drinks.
The objective of the Public Window Foundation is to promote interactive art in public spaces. Artists get the opportunity to develop interactive work for the audience on the street and the internet user at a distance. The shop windows have been tranfered into software windows. The viewer can control the works through the use of touch-screens fitted to the window. The occasional passer-by can change form, movement and / or lighting of the works.
Public Window 001 and Public Window 002, both in Leiden are the first in a sequence. Amsterdam, Delft, the Hague, Bruxelles, Basle, Dublin, Sydney and many other cities will follow. Artists will be able to reach new audiences throughout the world through this new social medium. Camera’s will make it possible for the art to travel, to be available for a greater audiences, the world will be the playground.
Public Window 001
In the window of Aalmarkt 12, Leiden (Public Window 001) Thomas Wildner developed the interactieve artwork POINT OF EXCITEMENT commissioned by the Public Window Foundation.
Thomas Wildner (Amsterdam, 1966) studied sculpturing and plastic design in Enschede at the AKI. He visited amongstothers the Chinatie foundation in Marfa (USA) and participated in the Trebesice residence programme in Prague(CZ). His works have been shown at various exhibitions and projects around the world in the Netherlands and in various countries around the world. In his works he states that an organised situation is much more unlikely than chaos. His works are simple, but also puzzling complex. Generally they have a pretty natural form. On the other side of the “Oude Rijn”, the window of Stille Rijn 9 is the domain of fellow artist Guido Winkler who developed the next installation (Public Window 002).
Public Window 002
In the window of Stille Rijn 9, Leiden (Public Window 002) Guido Winkler developed the interactieve artwork SHIFTED GROUND commissioned by the Public Window Foundation.
Guido Winkler (Leiden, 1969) is a painter and photographer. He also builds spatial installations which can be associated with architecture.
Winkler investigates and visualizes concepts to do with the perception of space and time and he is fascinated by the way we see reality in the spatial and visual sense. Because Winkler hates trends, he has through the years developed a variety of work with a monumental and graphical approach. Contrasting images which transcend reality have emerged. Although his work is built on what he sees, it never becomes an illustration of it, but rather a new reality in itself. Amongst other things he also investigates the values of a universal pictural language.
